A concrete patio is one of the most practical improvements you can make to your backyard. It gives you a stable, level surface for outdoor furniture, grilling, entertaining, and everyday use that grass, gravel, or pavers simply cannot match for durability and ease of maintenance. Once it is down it is down, and a properly installed slab requires very little attention beyond occasional cleaning while delivering years of reliable use.
In Lake City, where the weather allows for outdoor living for a good portion of the year, a well-built patio genuinely changes how you use your backyard. Whether you are looking to create a defined outdoor living area, replace an existing slab that has cracked and shifted over the years, or add a patio where there was none before, Lake City Concrete Services installs residential patios built to handle Florida's heat, rain, and humidity without deteriorating before their time. We work with homeowners on size, shape, finish, and drainage so the result fits the way you actually want to use your outdoor space.
A patio that was poured without the correct slope is one of the most common problems we see, and it causes more damage than most homeowners realize. When a patio does not drain away from the house, water from every rainstorm sits against your back wall and foundation. Over time that moisture finds its way into the structure, and what starts as a drainage problem with your patio can turn into a moisture problem inside your home. By the time that connection becomes obvious, the costs involved are significantly higher than replacing the patio ever would have been.
Cracked and sunken patios create their own set of issues. Uneven sections become trip hazards, especially for children and older family members who use the space regularly. Cracks that open up allow water and weeds to work their way through, which accelerates the deterioration of the surrounding sections. A patio that has shifted or settled unevenly also looks neglected, which pulls down the overall appearance of your backyard regardless of how much effort you put into the rest of the space.
Older patios often suffer from all of these problems at once because they were poured thinner than current standards recommend, without the reinforcement or base preparation that makes modern concrete last. At that point, patching and sealing buys time at best. A full replacement gives you a surface that is built correctly from the ground up and will not need to be revisited for decades.
Every patio installation we do starts with the ground itself. Before any concrete is poured, we evaluate the area, remove any existing slab or material, and assess the soil conditions underneath. Soft or uneven soil gets compacted and built up as needed so the base is stable before the forms go in. This step is not optional. A patio poured over an inadequately prepared base will settle unevenly, and once that process starts it does not stop on its own.
With the base prepared, we set the forms to define the shape and edges of the patio, confirm the slope so water drains away from the house rather than toward it, and pour the concrete to the correct thickness. The surface is then finished to the texture you have chosen, whether that is a standard broom finish for a practical non-slip surface or a smoother finish for a cleaner look. Expansion joints are placed at the correct intervals to allow the slab to expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking through the body of the concrete.
Once the pour is complete, the slab is allowed to cure properly before foot traffic resumes. We do not rush this stage. Curing time directly affects how hard and durable the finished surface becomes, and cutting it short to wrap up a job faster is one of the ways concrete ends up underperforming. Before we leave, we walk you through what to avoid during the first few weeks and answer any questions you have about caring for the new surface long term.
Patio pricing is driven by several variables that differ from one property to the next. Size is the primary factor, measured in square footage, and larger patios naturally require more material and labor. Shape plays a role too. A straightforward rectangular patio is more straightforward to form and pour than a custom shape with curves or angles, which takes additional time and skill to execute cleanly.
The condition of the existing surface matters if there is an old patio to remove. Demolition, breaking up the old slab, and hauling it away adds to the scope of work and is reflected in the estimate. Base preparation is another variable. If the soil beneath the existing slab has settled significantly or if the area has drainage issues that need to be corrected before the new slab goes down, that work is factored in.
Finish type affects pricing as well. A standard broom finish is the most practical and cost-effective option and what most residential patios use. Stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, or other decorative finishes are available for homeowners who want more visual interest, and each comes at a different price point depending on the complexity of the pattern or finish. We provide free on-site estimates based on your specific patio, your yard conditions, and what the job actually requires so you know exactly what you are paying for before any work begins.
Four inches is the standard thickness for a residential patio that will see normal foot traffic and outdoor furniture. If you are planning to park a vehicle on the patio or use it as a base for a heavy structure, we would recommend going thicker. For most standard backyard patios, four inches poured over a properly prepared base is more than adequate and will hold up well for decades with normal use.
Foot traffic can resume after 24 to 48 hours in most conditions. Light outdoor furniture can typically go back on the surface after about a week. Heavier items should wait closer to two weeks, and the full 28-day curing period should pass before the slab is subjected to any significant concentrated loads. Florida's heat can affect the curing timeline, and we factor that into the guidance we give you before we leave the job site.
Yes, and it is worth mentioning during the planning stage if that is something you are considering. A patio slab that will eventually support posts for a pergola or screen enclosure may need to be poured thicker or with additional reinforcement in specific areas to handle those loads properly. If you tell us upfront, we can account for it in the original pour rather than having to core through the finished slab later.
A standard broom finish gives you a clean, slightly textured surface that is practical, non-slip, and works well for most residential patios. Stamped concrete uses patterned tools pressed into the surface before it sets to create the appearance of stone, brick, slate, or other materials. Stamped concrete costs more and requires more skill to execute well, but it adds significant visual interest and can dramatically improve the overall look of your outdoor space. We offer both and can walk you through the options during your estimate.
